Abstract

This study explored the relationships between Husband¢¥s emotional support and the postpartum mothers self esteem and postpartum depression.
The purpose was to contribute to theoretical understanding of the relationships among these three variables and eventually to the planning of nursing care to enhance the health of mothers in the postpartum period.
Data were collected from June to August 1QQ1 with co nnctnartnm mnthnrc a lmitto 1 to two hospitals in Seoul.
Depression was measured by Zung¢¥s Self-rating Depression Scale, Self-esteem by Rosenberg¢¥s Self-Esteem Scale and Husbands¢¥ sup-port by a Scale previously developed and tested by the investigator.
Postpartum depression, the husband¢¥s supportive behavior and self-esteem were measured on .the mothers third postpartum day and at two weeks.
The data were analysed by an S. P. S. S. computerized program and included percent-ages, t-test, paired t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression.
The results of this study are summarized.
1) Postpartum depression was greater at two weeks than on the third day(p<.01).
2) The husband¢¥s supportive behavior was perceirved as lower during the postpartum period.
3) Self-esteem was lower at-two weeks than on the third day(p<.05).
4) The higher the husband¢¥s supportive behavior, the lower the postpartum depression(p<.05).
5) There were no significant differences between the husband¢¥s supportive behavior and the mother¢¥s self-esteem(p=.06).
6) The higher the mother¢¥s postpartum self-esteem, the lower the postpartum depression(p< .001).
7) In this study postpartum depression influences the mother¢¥s postpartum self-esteem : Variables related to the mother¢¥s self esteem were occupation, religion, complications during pregnancy the postpartum physical state, how much the husband liked the baby, postpartum state of recovery and knowledge of how the care for the baby.
